If transportation is not arranged by their company, many internationals prefer to use taxis or drive themselves. Those staying for long periods of time either lease or purchase a vehicle.

Driving in Guyana

Driving in Guyana is on the left-hand side of the road and seatbelts are legally required. You can drive with a valid foreign license but you must first get a Driving Permit which can be granted on the spot. Understand the process to get a Driving Permit in Guyana. Roads are generally good but traffic can be heavy in Georgetown and some larger towns.

Taxis in Guyana

Taxis are generally a safer option to get around and are easily available around Georgetown. They opt for taxis connected to major hotels or yellow taxis which are registered with the government licensing office. 

Public transportation

There is a public transportation network of mini-buses that connect locations throughout the country. Public transportation is privatized with vehicles owned and operated by private operators with the right commercial license. Public transportation does not adhere to fixed timetables. Routes, zones and prices are fixed but stops along the way depend on passenger need.

Traveling to the Interior

Guyana is a large country with forests and many rivers. Many places in the interior are long distances away from development and may require travel on roads that may not be as developed. To access these locations, a combination of charter flights, boats and/ or 4x4 vehicles may be necessary. There are a number of companies that specialize in organizing transport to these locations.
