Location

Guyana is located on the north-eastern shoulder of the continent of south America along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a border with Venezuela to the west, Brazil to the south and Suriname to the east.

History of Guyana

Guyana established itself as a republic in 1970 after receiving independence from British colonial rule in 1966. During its colonial days, the country changed hands frequently. It was once ruled by the French, Dutch, Spanish and British - influences that can been seen in the names of places today. Guyana’s rich multi-ethnic culture represents the heritage of its people who represent 6 races. It’s best reflected in their traditional food and national holidays.

Geography

The country is divided into 4 geographic areas and 10 administrative regions. 80% of the land is covered in forests. The majority of the population resides along the northern coast that extends along the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is a multiparty republic with one legislative house. It follows a democratic system with an Executive President, 65-member National Assembly and a Judiciary. Elections are held every five years.
