DOCTORS

Like the other medical providers in the Guyanese healthcare system, there are both public and private practice doctors. Even though they may work in a private practice, many private doctors are usually connected to a hospital. There is a growing number of medical centers with more than one doctor.

How do FOREIGNERS MANAGE medical CARE?

Public medical care is free in Guyana. Most internationals seek treatment with private doctors since the level of care is higher. Learn how dentists in Guyana work.

SPECIALIST TREATMENT

Georgetown Public Hospital is the largest and main referral hospital in the country providing a wide range of specialist care free of charge. Although it is public, patients of private doctors may still be referred there for specialist treatment. Find list of hospitals and medical centers here.

How do I pay?

Private medical care is not free. Expect to pay out of pocket for visits to private facilities.

Can I use my insurance?

Local insurance plans may be accepted. Although you may have international health insurance coverage, it may not be recognized by most private doctors so keep receipts for reimbursement afterwards. If you have a plan through a local employer, your visit to the doctor may be partially subsidized (although the amount depends on your insurance plan).
